Everything about this period rewards being booked early and punishes improvising. Courchevel spreads across four villages at different altitudes — 1850, 1650 Moriond, 1550 and Le Praz at 1300 — and over the peak weeks the road between them carries chalet changeovers, restaurant traffic and delivery vehicles on the same narrow climbs. Arrivals concentrate on Saturdays, when the whole Tarentaise turns over at once and the Moûtiers approach becomes a single-file bottleneck that regularly adds two hours to an afternoon transfer. New Year adds a second constraint: the return leg. Chalets empty on the 2nd and 3rd of January into the same congestion, and a departure timed for a midday flight out of Geneva has to leave Courchevel far earlier than the map suggests. The Trois Vallées is the largest linked ski area in the world at roughly 600 kilometres of pistes between 1,100 and 3,230 metres, with about 85 percent of it above 1,800 metres — which is why the resort fills reliably at Christmas regardless of a thin early season lower down. The return is planned backwards from departure
Chalets empty on 2 and 3 January into the same bottleneck. A midday Geneva flight means leaving Courchevel far earlier than a map estimate suggests — that gap is calculated, not guessed.
